Honda Civic Type R ‘Ultimate Edition’ marks the end of an era

40 special edition models will be produced before sales of the Type R conclude in Europe

Having been on the market since 1997 and with six generations of releases, Honda is bringing sales of the Civic Type R in Europe to a close with a final ‘Ultimate Edition’. Just 40 of the special editions (10 for the UK) will be produced by the brand and will be available for sale alongside the remaining standard models. Prices are yet to be confirmed, but expect it to be north of the £48k that the current-gen Civic Type R commands.

Success on the track

The Civic was the third Honda to receive Type R after the NSX and Integra, with red badges distinguishing them from standard Honda models. The popularity of the Civic Type R over the years goes beyond its production car status, however, and its exploits on track certainly caught the attention of the masses.

After making its mark in Japan, the Civic Type R went on to set front wheel drive production benchmarks at several of the world’s greatest circuit, including the Nürburgring Nordschleife, Spa-Francorchamps, Hungaroring, Suzuka and Silverstone.

Racing success also followed, with the Civic Type R delivering success for drivers and teams in the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) and World Touring Car Cup (WTCR).

Design features

The ‘Ultimate Edition’ Civic Type R celebrates 28 years of hot hatch thrills and is decked in trademark Championship White paint with bespoke red decals across the side of the car, bonnet and badge. Other features include a black roof and carbon fibre detailing on the wing spoiler and doorstep garnish.

Interior

Further carbon is used throughout the interior, including the centre console panel, however, it could be argued that lighting plays more of a prominent role. Additional lighting is used in the door lining, cup holder, centre console, footwell and provides illumination under the seats. A Type R logo is also projected when opening the front doors.

Honda has also thrown in a few extra goodies for buyers of the Civic Type R ‘Ultimate Edition’. A matching gift box containing a numbered emblem from one to 40, carbon key ring, custom made floor mats and a car cover is part of the package.

“Our model range is having to evolve”

“As we say farewell to a true icon of the Honda automobile line-up in Europe, we thought it was fitting to give the Civic Type R the ultimate send-off with this special edition model offering our customers a unique opportunity to celebrate its legacy,” said Hannah Swift, Head of European Strategy and Product at Honda Motor Europe

“The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. However, Type R has always been Honda’s ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.”

Sales of the Civic Type R will conclude in 2026.
