New Volkswagen Tayron available from £39,850

Order books open January 9th

The new Volkwagen Tayron goes on sale this week in the UK with prices starting from £39,850. Sitting between the big selling Tiguan and flagship Touareg SUV in the Volkswagen range, the new Tayron is available as a five or seven-seater.

Exterior & towing capacity

Design wise, the Tayron is pretty standard as SUVs go, although Volkswagen describes its sharply drawn lines and shape as emphasising its premium feel. It becomes the first ICE powered VW on the European market with illuminated logos at the front and rear. Also helping light the way is a full length LED crossbar and 3D tail light clusters.

The Tayron offers a towing capacity of 2,400kg thanks to Volkswagen’s Trailer Assist manoeuvring system, which comes as standard. However, for a little extra help, a folding towing brack can be added to make trailers easier to handle and that’s after you’ve filled the 850 litres of boot space.

Interior & equipment as standard

Inside, VW has gone for a premium feel, using materials like ArtVelours Eco (microfibre), authentic open-pore wood and an illuminated decorative trim.

There are five trim levels available - Life, Match (eHybrid only), Elegance, R-Line and R-Line Edition (eHybrid only) All five come with three-zone air conditioning, 10-colour background lighting, an infotainment system with 12.9-inch screen, and a multi-function driving experience switch for adjusting driving profiles, audio volume and cabin atmospheres using pre-programmed lighting and audio mood as standard.

Other standard features include LED headlights with automatic main beam control, nine airbags, and standard assist systems such as adaptive cruise control (ACC), lane change system (Side Assist), lane keeping system (Lane Assist), and an automatic emergency braking system with pedestrian and cyclist monitoring (Front Assist).

To sprinkle a little extra on your Tayron, options include a 15-inch infotainment display, head-up display, IQ.LIGHT HD matrix headlights, IDA voice assistant with ChatGPT, a tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof and 700-watt Harman-Kardon sound system.

Choice of six engines

Three engines will be available for the Tayron in the UK from January 9th with another three to join from February 20th, each paired with a six- or seven-speed automatic gearbox. An abundance of choice provides petrol, diesel and hybrid variants.

The entry-level ‘Life’ Tayron uses a 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine producing 148bhp, while the top of the range ‘R-Line’ model is powered by a 2.0 litre 4MOTION 286bhp mild-hybrid engine, costing £50,000.

Charge times and electric range

Electric only driving is available with the 19.7kWh battery eHybrid versions of the Tayron, which offer an electric range of up to 75 miles. A 10-80% charge can be done in 26 minutes with a 11 kW AC and 40 kW DC charger.

Volkswagen tops UK new car sales in 2024

In other VW news, Volkswagen has topped new car sales in the UK for the fourth year running according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) today.

The German manufacturer had an 8.52% market share, with 166,304 of its cars registered in the UK last year, 41,000 ahead of its closest competitor and 4,217 more than in 2023.

New models were introduced to the market, including the ID.7, ID,7 Tourer, new Passat, new Tiguan and revised T-Cross.

However, it was a similar story to previous years as the Golf was once again Volkswagen’s most popular model in the UK, with 32,370 being registered in the year it celebrated its 50th anniversary. It also placed sixth in the market overall and was joined in the top 10 by the Polo, also set to celebrate its 50th anniversary.
